04:09 am - Not A Good Start

Welp, not going as planned. Feel like I'm playing ok though, a few mistakes here and there but that's to be expected as I hadn't really played much in december. I've lost basically every preflop flip (and there was quite afew) but I won't bore you with those.

Ok here's the worst played hand. Every street is either marginal or bad.

Hero (SB): $585.60
BB: $523.45
UTG: $610.20
BTN: $287.50

Preflop: Hero is dealt A T (4 Players)
2 folds, Hero raises to $16.00, BB raises to $48.00, Hero calls $32.00
- Blind vs Blind. Opponent is a straightforward weakish tag that I thought I could outplay preflop. Obviously marginal because I'm out of position.

Flop: ($96) 3 J 8 (2 Players)
Hero checks, BB bets $65.00, Hero calls $65.00
- I check call here repping Jx/TT. Plan was to 1/2 pot river if the turn gets checked though (I don't think he double barrels much so gives up on turn if he has nothing). I feel this is the best line to take the pot away, and a good board to do it on.

Turn: ($226) 5 (2 Players)
Hero checks, BB bets $130.00, Hero raises all-in to $472.60, BB calls all-in for $280.45
- Ok here's the biggest mistake of the whole hand. I said before that he is only double barreling with good made hands, but for some reason I was just like 'ooo flushdraw im all in'. Against good aggressive players this would be a good move as they could double barrel with air here as my flop call is quite weak (alot of Jx hands and TT cant call a 2nd bet). This player though is so straightforward that a fold is the only play here.

River: ($1046.90) 3 (2 Players - 2 All-In)

Pot Size: $1,046.90 ($0.50 Rake)
BB had A A (two pair, aces and threes) and WON (+$520.55)
Hero had A T (a pair of threes) and LOST (-$523.45)

Here's another interesting hand. I've talked about it with a few other people and the general consensus is that betting smaller on the flop and turn so I can shove river is a more credible line.

SB: $196.00
Hero (BB): $417.90
UTG: $630.85
MP: $155.50
CO: $413.40
BTN: $331.50

Preflop: Hero is dealt 9 T (6 Players)
2 folds, CO raises to $14.00, 2 folds, Hero calls $10.00
- tightish tag who cbets too much. I call here planning on c/r alot of flops. 3betting or folding are also fine options

Flop: ($30) 3 J 5 (2 Players)
Hero checks, CO bets $23.00, Hero raises to $85.00, CO calls $62.00
- really good board to c/r on. I can rep sets and a ton of draws very easily. After he calls here I put him on a good Jx or possibly an overpair (although some people would shove overpairs here).

Turn: ($200) 2 (2 Players)
Hero bets $144.00, CO calls $144.00
- perfect turn, most draw get there (it's hard for him to have a big draw as he just called the flop c/r). So i follow through, expecting him to fold all his Jx hands and most overpairs that don't contain hearts.

River: ($488) A (2 Players)
Hero checks, CO checks
- interesting river, kind of a blank as it doesnt change anything (unless he has AA) because I either have a set+ here or air. Because I don't have much behind I elect to check, but as outlined above if I bet less on flop and turn I could have shoved this river.

Pot Size: $488.00 ($0.50 Rake)

CO had J A (two pair, aces and jacks) and WON (+$241.00)
Hero had 9 T (ace high) and LOST (-$243.00)

other than that there's not too many interesting hands. Mostly standard ones like AQ v 66 on a AQ6 board and alot of preflop flips. Actually I do have one last hand to show. The 6max table had broken and I'd been left playing HU with this donk. He was minraising my cbets alot so I thought this was a pretty good place to make a stand, hopefully folding out 9x, or a weak Jx if I'm lucky. Turns out he snap folded and showed AJ, my head exploded

2/4nl HU
Hero (BB): $404.00
SB: $417.20

Preflop: Hero is dealt Q T (2 Players)
SB raises to $8.00, Hero raises to $28.00, SB calls $20.00

Flop: ($56) J 9 3 (2 Players)
Hero bets $44.00, SB raises to $88.00, Hero raises all-in to $376.00, SB folds

also, many of you may have heard that 3-bet.net has merged with www.deucescracked.com . As I get coached by one of the executive producers WiltonTIlt I've been fortunate enough to beta test their new site. I was pretty blown away by it, this stuff is so much better than the other training sites and their content is easily the best in the market. Three things that I was really impressed with are:

- they have the best MSNL to low HSNL players on the net - FWF, DJ sensei, wilt, duck. Like it's ok to watch Aba and Peachykeen play, but I feel the stuff you'd learn from players who destroy 2/4-10/20 would be much more practical to your own game.

- they've moved away from only showing people playing. Although some videos still do use the 'old method' of getting on afew tables and firing up camtasia (which is fine in moderation) they've added new formats such as - powerpoint presentations, and replaying only interesting hands from the session which follow a theme - and show less hands which allows for a much more indepth analysis

- all videos are done in series (seems like they're going to have multiple series running at the same time and releasing a new ep to each series weekly). this is excellent because rather than having each video being independent of each other, all the video in the series build upon things in previous videos which makes it a much better learning experience.

I know this kind of sounds like an ad for them :P but this site is seriously so good that I wanted to let you guys in on it. I don't know when they're opening the doors to the public (although you can see short intro videos right now) but when they do you guys should check it out.

Anywayz that's all for now - back to the grind.

09:29 am - '07 Review And Goals For The Future
Welp, it's been just over a year since I started playing poker. It was full of ups and downs as I blindly felt my way forward. I did alot of things wrong like playing a ton of tables or hands, not studying enough, bad sleep habits, etc. I learnt from them though and feel that making those mistakes really helped my game. It's kind of funny now that I think back and go through all the epiphanies and new discoveries I made - starting tight and very straight forward, learning about position, 3betting, messing with regs, and so on.

Ended up making around 120k including my 30k BBJ score. A little disappointing but I'll take it.

Next year I'm hoping for a big one. Discipline will be my main goal: tilting less, studying more, concentrating at the tables. First plan will be to consolidate my position at 2/4 and 3/6, build the bankroll a little more, then move up to 5/10 when the games are good. I'll also be trialing a new system that will hopefully get me motivated and enjoying the game more. Rather than have poker as my main thing I'm going to place more importance on my hobbies (golf, guitar, uni) then mix poker in the gaps. So rather than playing a 3 hour session, getting bored then finding something else to do I'll ideally play 2 or 3 1.5 hour session when I have free time during the day. By adding more interesting things to my life and knowing I can't play long sessions I hope to become more motivated and enjoy the game more (hence becoming less caught up in net won/lost). I'm also going to get healthy as I used to be fit as but am becoming abit of a slob. So waking up early and running every morning, eating healthier and drinking less are all on the agenda.

January is already looking to be pretty action packed - melbourne for a week, finding a place to live (and fully furnishing it), buy a car, basically just getting myself set up in perth. So ya really looking forward to spending alot of $$$.

Oh and 250k, which tbh may even be on abit of the low side - but it's achievable and I don't want to try and force myself to make money so i'm leaving it there at the moment. Hope you guys have a good new years :)

11:28 pm - Getting Ready For '08
Hey guys,

Hope you all had a good christmas! Mine was a little draining - did lots of thing with family friends who haven't seen me for ages so they were grilling me with a ton of poker questions. It also seemed that most of their motives for asking all the questions was to try and find flaws in my logic where they could pounce and explain to me that I'm addicted and once I stop getting lucky I'm going to lose all my money. It's hard to explain poker intelligently to someone who doesn't know much about the game, especially when they have preconceived notions that poker is pure gambling with no skill like other casino games (eg. roulette). I wish I could talk about ranges and equity, but instead I have to try to use analogies and liken it to other skill games with a luck component such as the stock market. Some see my point - most though stick to their guns so I try to change the subject or just side with them 'yeh ur right my luck has to end soon'.

Other than that though I've been hanging out, getting ready for '08. Haven't played much this month at all mainly due to travelling (spent first 2 weeks in queensland) probably around 5k hands or so. I have been studying quite abit though, and thinking about my game. Been implementing things like bluffing with made hands, and just thinking about villains ranges alot more (mostly finding spots to fold out alot of their range). Some examples from today:

Raised 98s from the sb, bb calls (read: is loose, likes to float)

22T, i cbet and he calls
- was fully expecting a call so was doing it to inflate the pot for my turn move

turn 6, I c/r
- pretty standard against a floater, the only problem is im repping a strong ten/2x, but it's pretty hard for me to be raising 2x from sb. Still though I think this is ok against this opponent who can't hand read, but I would be hesitant to make this play against a competent player

Raised A5s in CO, loose sb calls.

flop Q8h5, both check

turn Kh, he bets $20 into a $44 pot - i call
- smallish bet, alot of draws out there plus I think I can play him off a worse Q/8 on the river

river Jh, he bets $44 into $84, i raise to $122
- at first I didnt like this river. But his bet size seemed to be a 1 pair/weak 2 pair trying to squeeze value. It's very easy for me to rep a straight or flush as I he thinks I would play a turned gutshot or flushdraw the same. I think even with KQ here this would be a very very hard call - plus from his river betsizing it's hard for him to have a straight/flush.

I'm also trying things like 1/2pot cbetting dry flops against player who like to c/r alot so i can 3bet w/air against them, that's been working out ok so far but I haven't had too many opportunities to try it. So ya, not much else to report on the poker front - just kind of waiting for Jan1 to come. Next blog though I'll do a 2007 year in review and my 2008 goals.

01:08 am - New Setup!
Today I decided I need more screenspace so went out and bought a 30" samsung monitor. It's pretty sick and is wayyyy bigger irl than it looks in the picture. Parallels allows me to run mac OS on the laptop screen and windows OS on the external monitor which is pretty handy. Now I have the problem of owning a 6 month old computer with 2 20" screens and not knowing what to do. I think I may just put the 2 20" in storage til I buy a pc that can run all 3 monitors, and use the old pc as a media storage thingo that I'll access remotely. Anywayz here's a picture, note the awesome usb numpad and vertical mouse - ignore the table ;)

Only played for around 20 minutes today. Ran hot and made around $600, no hands to post here though as I'm having a little trouble importing hands into HoldemManager. The cool thing about Realtime HUD is that it can act independent of a database program (PT/HM) so I still have stats on people. I'm thinking about playing abit on Cake Poker so acquired a ton of HH from a friend and will check it out - apparently the games used to be awesome but aren't that good anymore, even still they'll hopefully be better than party/FT/Stars as they're a small site.

That's all for now, I promise I'll have some hands for tommorow - even if I have to manually save hands in notepad (or whatever the mac version of notepad is).

09:42 pm - A New Start
Welcome to my new blog!

As it says in my profile I'm an 19 year old dude from Perth. Been playing poker for almost a year so far and it's been a pretty good ride. Currently playing 2/4 and 3/6 NL on afew different sites and looking to move up to 5/10 soon. Last few months I've been taking it easy on the poker, not playing or studying much - but now I'm back and ready to get into it big time. Here's a picture of me working hard in the office:

This blog will be mainly for post session reviews where I post all the interesting hands for the day with my comments included. I'll also post afew life updates. Should be good as I'm aiming to absolutely crush this game over the next few months.

Anywayz today i got my macbook pro. 2.6 Ghz, 4Gb ram, 17" 1920x1200 screen - it's a beast. Never used mac before but I've found it pretty easy to get used to. Paralells is also handy as I'll be running my poker programs on vista. Because I can't be bothered waiting for PT and PAhud rego keys I'm going to try out Holdem Manager and Realtime HUD. Those two programs will be the main competitor to PT3 when i comes out early next year so it'll give me a good opportunity to compare (and obv ill post my findings here).

So my plans for the next few months are: find a car and house, 1 week in melbourne for aussie millions, get ready to go back to uni (2nd year commerce) and of course grind like hell :)
